Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel, reachable by bus or car from Awan, but also via a nearby airport, for those who cruise the Mediterranean or the Nile, is an exercise in superlatives. The massive sculptures were a reminder of those about to enter Egypt from the south of the power of Rameses II and of that of the Egyptian empire.

Tombs and the step pyramid

Nearly lost to the rising waters of Lake Nasser which accrued behind the new Aswan Dam, it was resued by UNESCO. This gives one a sense of the massive size of this sculpture.

A prohibited picture taken inside, but absolutely worth taking the risk
