Abu Simbel, reachable by bus or car from Awan, but also via a nearby airport, for those who cruise the Mediterranean or the Nile, is an exercise in superlatives. The massive sculptures were a reminder of those about to enter Egypt from the south of the power of Rameses II and of that of the Egyptian empire. |

Nearly lost to the rising waters of Lake Nasser which accrued behind the new Aswan Dam, it was resued by UNESCO. This gives one a sense of the massive size of this sculpture. |
